Design and build
The Vivo V23 5G has a flat-screen and flat edge. Its camera area design is the same as on the Pro model. Looks like Vivo has taken inspiration from Samsung and Apple, mixing these design elements altogether with the phone’s signature color – sunshine gold. The phone is also available in Stardust Black. This sunshine gold color is a result of reactive dye that changes when exposed to sunlight or other UV lights. The paint can take from 30 seconds to a couple of minutes for the color to change from golden to bluish-green.
Due to its curved sides, this one can slip out of your hand more easily. But the flatter aluminum frame of the V23 offers better grip even without using the case so you get to enjoy the soft sandy feel of the fluoride glass on the back. The buttons on this phone have a little click. There is a single bottom-firing speaker on the Vivo V23 5G and no headphone jack or FM radio support either. It’s a bit of a letdown for a phone at this price.
Cameras
As far as cameras go, the Vivo V23 5G really shines in the selfie department with the same setup as on the V23 Pro. You get a 50-megapixel main camera with auto-focus, an 8 MP, f/2.2, 120˚, 16mm (ultrawide), 1/4.0″, 1.12µm, and two dual tones LEDs that are hidden in the corners of the frame. Selfies are captured at 12.5 megapixels by default. Shots look fantastic! The colors were natural and the background had pleasant bokeh thanks to its dual 50 MP, f/2.0, (wide), AF and 8 MP, f/2.3, 105˚ (ultrawide) selfie shooter.
4K videos from the main front camera are stunning. The autofocus works well and doesn’t hurt either. With EIS off footage is decently steady, but if you’re willing to shoot in Full HD and accept a bit of crop, you can switch it on enjoy even smoother videos. There’s EIS on both the main and Ultrawide cameras in the back. There’s also a super stabilization mode on the main camera that smooths out the video further.
Performance
The Vivo V23 5G has a MediaTek Dimensity 920 5G (6 nm) chipset, and eight or 12 GB of RAM. For reference, its closest Snapdragon competitors are the Snapdragon 860 and the 778G. While they beat the phone in terms of raw performance, this phone holds its own as an excellent mid-range performer. Even with torture testing, the phone rarely gets too hot.
Theming the phone is Funtouch 12 on top of Android 12. And you will see some new Android 12 features here and there. For example, Google’s grain notification dot, which indicates when the camera or microphone is in use and the more bouncy animations. System menus are tailored for single-handed use. And its default selection of widgets is more intuitive than before. Of course, you also have a dedicated ultra game mode that helps you mitigate disturbances during games.
Display
On the front, which is the display of the Vivo V23 5G, you’ll find a notch with two selfie cameras that isn’t too obtrusive (Hey Siri!). It also hides proper proximity and a light sensor which are better than virtual alternatives. Now this display is covered by Schott Xensation Up glass. This is a step down from the V23 Pro Schott Xensation Alpha which is said to rival Gorilla Glass Victus.
There’s an optical under-display fingerprint reader, which is snappy and reliable. As for the display itself, Vivo V23 5G has a 6.44 inches AMOLED panel. The phone supports HDR 10 Plus and HLG and has the highest possible wide Vine L1DRM certification for higher streaming resolutions. And while it handles an auto-refresh rate option, it’s not reliable. So you should stick to either 90Hz or the standard 60 Hz.
Battery
Its Li-Po 4200 mAh battery is respectable. And the phone makes good use of its capacity with 103 hours on endurance tests. The 44W flash charge of the V23 5G comes with also works well. You can charge the phone from dead to 60% in half an hour. For a full charge, you will need just over an hour, which is quite good too.
